BioLPG

BioLPG is chemically identical to Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), but with a lower carbon footprint.

What is bioLPG?

What is bioLPG?

BioLPG is propane produced from renewable feedstocks such as plant and vegetable waste material; it is also called renewable propane and biopropane.

BioLPG is  an ideal energy solution for those wishing to reduce their carbon footprint, as it reduces CO2 emissions up to 80%. It is identical in use and performance to conventional LPG. At SHV Energy we are proud to pioneer this product and are developing a strong pipeline of new opportunities in order to continually expand our ability to supply sustainable bioLPG to our customers who live and work beyond the grid.

BioLPG can be produced in a number of ways depending on the feedstock and process. Currently, the main production method is the renewable (or HVO) biodiesel production process. This also generates a by-product of bioLPG. During the refining process, a variety of waste ‘off-gases’ are produced that contain propane or bioLPG. For every tonne of biodiesel, 50 kg of bioLPG is generated from this off-gas stream. This co-product is then purified to make it identical to conventional propane.

Why use bioLPG?

Why switch?

Get reliable energy while reducing carbon emissions and helping the environment.

BioLPG is made from completely renewable crop grown and waste feed stocks.
BioLPG is now being delivered in many countries within Europe. It is being distributed by the local SHV Energy business units, see the map below for more details.
For bioLPG use there are more than a thousand applications ranging from cooking to heating, agricultural uses, industrial applications and even bird scarers.
BioLPG reduces CO2 emissions by up to 80%.
BioLPG is chemically identical to standard LPG and can be blended 100% (no need for a separate supply chain)
BioLPG is identical in its use to conventional LPG so does not require new equipment.

BioLPG and sustainability

With our products we are contributing to the reduction of carbon emissions and air pollution.

At SHV Energy, we measure the carbon impact of our products and services based on the carbon footprint of our customers. This reduces as our customers switch from higher carbon and more polluting solid and liquid fuels, such as heating oil, coal and woody biomass*, to LPG, LNG or bioLPG. In 2019, we saved around 308 Mt of CO2 through the supply of our products (LPG, LNG and bioLPG) to our customers. This is equal to growing more than 141,000 trees for 100 years. See how we manage the bioLPG distribution process effectively through ‘mass balance’ in this video.

*LPG has lower emissions compared to polluting solid and liquid fuels, and has virtually no particulate matter emissions, improving both indoor and outdoor air quality. It also eliminates nearly all black carbon emissions from household cooking and helps reduce deforestation.

How are we integrating bioLPG into our sustainability efforts?

Every year, we publish a report on our sustainability performance

What our customers say

Montalto state

Case study

Montalto Estate in Ireland switch to Calor bioLPG 100% renewable energy

“Our whole ethos is sustainability, re-growing, regenerating woodlands, the gardens, the buildings themselves”. David Wilson — Managing Director, Montalto Estate

Case study

BrookLodge & Macreddin Village in Ireland and the UK switch to Calor bioLPG 100% renewable energy

“Sustainability has been part of what we do here in Brook Lodge and the Strawberry Tree since the day dot”. Evan Doyle — Founder, Brooklodge & Macreddin Village

BrookLodge & Macreddin Village
La-Roche Posay and Primagaz

Case study

La-Roche-Posay became the first industrial site in France to use bioLPG in 2018

BioLPG as a drop-in replacement fuel was particularly relevant for La-Roche-Posay, as the product has no impact on the performance of their manufacturing activity and it could be easily incorporated in the distribution network of Primagaz France.
