Just a year earlier, Gaspol had introduced hybrid systems, combining liquefied gas with a heat pump. Now, the business was again at the forefront of innovation by bringing bioLPG to Polish customers – setting new goals and confronting new challenges in both the regulatory and business domains.
2024 was a period of intense work in three areas regarding bioLPG:
- addressing regulation,
- developing customer awareness of the product and
- preparing the organisation to supply a renewable gas that had not been offered in our market before. Gaspol was able to lean heavily on the experiences of Futuria Fuels, as well as other SHV Energy European businesses that already have a strong track record working with bioLPG.
The regulatory path to support the introduction of bioLPG required intensive work with Poland's Ministry of Climate and Environment, Ministry of Industry and Energy Regulatory Office on several key areas. These included the recognised method of counting and confirming the carbon intensity factor for bioLPG and obtaining the required sustainability certification and documentation, as well as placing bioLPG within the national legal framework that regulates the sale of pure bioLPG or the blending of the fuel with fossil-derived LPG, as stipulated by Poland's Renewable Energy Sources Act and the Act on Biocomponents and Liquid Biofuels.
As the first entity to introduce bioLPG to the Polish market, Gaspol also opened a new area for public administration, and our proactive approach has been well received by regulatory institutions. The collaboration for bioLPG implementation became successful as, together with public administrative bodies, Gaspol helped develop standards that will serve the entire market, and finalised a series of initial sales transactions immediately after the first delivery to Gdańsk.
Building customer awareness meant sharing knowledge during dedicated pre-sales meetings and webinars, where Gaspol highlighted that, from a physico-chemical perspective, bioLPG is no different from traditional LPG. This means that both products can use the same infrastructure, eliminating the infrastructural and logistics costs often associated with introducing a new, lower-carbon footprint renewable product.
This resonated with customers interested in innovation and renewable gas technologies. One of the first customers to choose bioLPG was Hotel Osada Karbówko Wellness & Spa, a luxury leisure facility in north-central Poland.
"Thanks to bioLPG, I have electricity and heating. I believe that the future belongs to bioLPG."
Witold Karbowski
Owner of Wellness & Spa Hotel Osada Karbówko.
We have developed business models for selling bioLPG to the heating, industrial and transport sectors based on domestic and European climate regulations. Currently, we supply bioLPG to customers from various sectors, hoping to increase volumes and expand our offer in 2025. The emerging biomethane market in Poland is perceived as one of the most promising areas, as biomethane producers are interested in adding bioLPG to biomethane to improve the parameters of the gas.
We believe 2024 was the right time to introduce bioLPG to the Polish market, strengthening Gaspol's position as a company focused on innovations and new products. Sustainable fuels will play an increasingly important role across EU countries as an enabler of the energy transition.
"We believe 2024 was the ideal time to introduce bioLPG to the Polish market, strengthening Gaspol's position as a company focused on innovations and new products."
