The HFE programme aims to reduce the risk of human error, prevent incidents, increase production and ensure safe access to and understanding of equipment. A key challenge we face is that equipment is often manufactured in different countries, which may have distinct population groups, varying anthropometric data and different interpretations of the equipment. HFE helped Primagaz address this challenge.
At the Karlshamn facility in Sweden, when building a new district heating unit, the on-site team, together with Health & Safety teams from Primagaz Scandinavia and SHV Energy, conducted comprehensive HFE assessments during various design stages. The focus was on ensuring safe access and egress, optimising equipment layout, positioning valves effectively, reducing the risk of injuries and preventing human error in an environment where the product is under pressure and at elevated temperatures.
The team also conducted maintenance activities, including replacing heavy components such as pumps or electric motors weighing 315 kilos. Job safety task analyses were performed on all activities, addressing concerns over various design phases. A crucial question was whether any component could be safely removed for maintenance work.

As a result of these HFE assessments during the design phase, Primagaz created a state-of-the-art district heating unit. Wat is more, the team believes that we have effectively minimised the risk of human error and eliminated the risk of injuries by considering all activities potentially occurring in the area.
